Reduced number of bankrupt studios and tensions in the community.

Promotion and accessibility for studio photography.

Professional training and meeting center for photographers.

    Characteristics of the studios

Why didn't you opt for a painted cyclorama in all 3 studios?

Studio St-André is the only studio that includes a cyclo. It is painted on demand, at the cost of 95$. All 3 studios are equiped with paper backdrops.

A cyclorama needs to be repainted after every use, meaning that it requires having someone repainting it after every booking. You also need to consider time for an adequate paint drying, sweeping the floor before painting, and cleaning painting tools after. Since the required paint is matt, it's really easy to dirty the floor when you step on it (even bare foot), and light stands and small wheels can leave unwanted marks.

Studio4fun uses paper rolls because they are easier to use and to manage. At the end of a time-period, the user can simply cut-out the dirtied paper, saving the painting hassle. For environmental purposes, a recycling bin is provided. It should be noted that you can quickly switch from a white to a black background (or vice-versa), which is an advantage over a cyclorama option.

How will users access the studio? Will they receive keys to the studio?

Once the booking of a period is confirmed, you will receive a numeric code by e-mail. This unique code will be required to open the combination lock of the studio entrance door. It will be possible to lock the door from inside. You will have to lock before leaving the studio. In case of an access problem, you will be able to join the Studio4fun management by phone.

Why didn't you locate the studio on the Plateau Mont-Royal or someplace more “central” like downtown Montreal?

Parking is one of the problem of the Plateau Mont-Royal and the Old Port and downtown Montreal locations. Nothing is more frustrating than searching for a nearby space to be able to unload photo equipment from a car. Parking fees and contraventions are very frequent in these locations. It played an important part in the choice of the studio location.

Will the users have access to a locker for their equipment, to avoid having to haul it every time?

At this time, Studio4fun does not include the use of lockers, however, it is something we are looking into for the future. The photographers will need to carry their equipment with them each time.

We, at Studio4fun, have reservations with regard to the installation of personal lockers. The first is liability: Studio4fun releases itself from all responsibility occurring from any incident ( e.g., fire, theft, etc.) damaging equipment inside the lockers. Secondly, being that the accessibility to the studio is restricted to your time-period, one would not have access to his/her equipment at all time. Lastly, the construction of such lockers would be too costly at this time. Should lockers be built at a later date, a minimal monthly or annual fee would be added to your membership.

What happens if Studio4fun is so occupied that there are no more available time-periods?

We foresee a peak occupancy of 60-70%. This means that if the occupancy rate reaches 60-70% in a durable manner, we will open a fourth studio to meet the demand.

Who is responsible for the studios maintenance ?

Volunteers will clean the studio outside of booked time-periods. It is expected that users leave the studio in an orderly state before leaving the studio. A user who repeatedly leaves a mess will no longer have access to Studio4fun, and a fine could be deducted from their damage deposit. Out of respect for following users, project designers and volunteers, please keep the premises clean.

Does Studio4fun rent equipment on the spot? Is it possible to have community equipment that all users could share?

Due to the added expenses such as acquisition cost, repairs, wear and tear, theft, etc., we prefer not to take this risk. At Studio4fun, our goal is to provide you with the space to create. We chose to let the specialty stores take care of this risk, minimizing additional management efforts. To rent quality equipment at a reasonable price, we recommend 2 stores: L.L.Lozeau and PhotoService Ltée.

Studio4Fun members get a 20% discount on equipment rentals at Photo-Service.

If Studio4fun does not foresee obtaining community equipment for the aforementioned reasons, its users can donate equipment to the studio and make it available to everyone. It should be noted that all forgotten and unclaimed equipment will automatically be considered as a gift to Studio4fun and will become its property. Be vigilant!!

Do the studios have outlets for 220V?

Yes, except Studio St-André (planned for the end of 2011). Outlets for 220V with an amperage of 25 amps each are available. Check the ''Photo studios'' sections for the technical specs of each studio . Users are free to use 220V outlets to supply their own equipment. People using continuous lighting systems (e.g., in video) will be delighted. It should also be noted that all the studios are equipped with several 110V outlets on independent circuit breakers, which will allow you to connect all your equipment without having to worry about power failure.

    Are the studios air-conditioned? Heated?

    Yes.

    Memberships & Rates

What is the purpose of the refundable security deposit ?

The refundable security deposit is payable when you make a reservation and refundable at the end of the time-period. It is used to cover the unexpected expenses occasioned by misuse of the studio equipment or a user's carelessness.

What is the purpose of the annual fee?

The Studio4fun annual fee is similar to the system used by Costco, except that Studio4fun offers three scales of fees, according to the planned level of usage for each user. Annual fees cover all administrative costs and also provides a financial cushion to cover the irregular use of the studio during the year. For example, one month could be really busy while the next could be really quiet; so the fees represent a working capital for Studio4fun and aim to ensure it is running throughout the year.

Will I get a receipt after paying the annual fee? The time-period rate?

You will get an invoice for the annual fees and the time-period rate. Taxes (GST and QST) are applicable for the annual fees and for the time-period rate. Both taxes are not included in the aforementioned prices.

Can a user book more than one time-period in a row?

Yes. Certain restrictions apply. See next question.

Are there any restrictions? If so, what are they?

The restrictions are only meant for potential excessive users and therefore shouldn't have any repercussion on regular users. Indeed, a survey conducted as part of our feasibility study showed that there was a concern regarding the possible abuse of the privileges enjoyed by category A and B users. Obviously, no system is perfect and the abuse has to be considered, even if it is an unlikely possibility. These restrictions aim to reassure the users that Studio4fun won't tolerate such abuse.

    The restrictions are the following:

    - A user is not allowed to book more than 6 weekend time-periods per month.
    - A category A user is not allowed to book more than 100 time-periods per year.
    - A category B user is not allowed to book more than 60 time-periods per year.
The user who has reach one of these limitations will be personally contacted by the Studio4fun administration who will assess the requirement for restrictions on the account of the user. Each case will be assessed individually.

Why are there two time-periods on weekdays and three on weekends?

It should be noted that Studio4fun aims to meet the needs of two major types of users. The first type involves people with full-time jobs and therefore are more interested in renting the studio on weeknights and on weekends. The second type involves people who need a studio for their day-time job (e.g., professional photographers) and who will be more interested in renting the studio on weekdays and occasionally on weekends.

During the week, these two types work well together. However, there is a higher demand for weekends. The schedule of the time-periods has been adapted in order to accommodate both types of users. During the week, a day time-period (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM) and a night time-period (4:00 to 11:00 PM) are available to users. During weekends, there are three time-periods per day in order to allow more users to take advantage of the studio. These time-periods have been set up according to the following schedule: AM (8:00 AM to 1:00 PM), PM (1:00 PM to 6:00 PM) and evening (6:00 to 11:00 PM).

What happens if a user books all the time-periods?

We are aware that the studio availability could be an issue for Studio4fun users. That's why we established some restrictions especially meant for potential excessive users who could go against one of the goals of the studio sharing: an affordable studio made available to users whose frequency of use isn't high enough to justify renting a studio by themselves.

We remind you that it is always better to plan your needs and to book in advance in order to make sure that you get the desired time-period. The studio availability schedule can be consulted on our website at any time. Our mandate isn't to ensure a complete availability for everyone and the “FirstCome, First-Served” system is the easiest one to manage: it allows us to keep costs to a minimum, ensuring the project sustainability. However, you might want to look up other studios asking for a higher price, as it is the main availability moderator, but Studio4fun wishes to keep this affordable price.

Is it possible to use the studio outside opening hours (before 9/8AM or after 11PM)? And throughout several days in a row?

Yes. Although time-periods are from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM during the week and from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM during the weekend, it is possible to extend the time-period before 9/8AM or after 11PM. Everything is possible. Keep in mind that the main entrance of the RCA Centre is closed between 10PM and 7AM in order to avoid vandalism in the building. It does not prevent you from leaving the building freely at any time but the key to the main entrance door is necessary to get into the RCA Centre after 10PM.

It is also possible to book time-periods throughout several days in a row, allowing you to leave your setup for the next working day. Each case will be assessed individually and a minimal additional charge will probably be required in some cases. We will be pleased to accommodate your needs to the best of our ability.

Can I book a time-period at a lower rate under a package A user's account rather than paying more my own package C account?

No. It is one of the reason why we limit the number of booking time-periods per year for Category A and B users. Moreover, avoiding to pay for the annual fees as well as the right time-period rate is necessarily detrimental to the Studio4fun's development. Remember that the membership is used, in part, to finance all the leasehold improvements (electricity, studio paint, counters, etc.), to buy initial equipment and supplies (background supports, initial paper rolls, etc.). The annual fees are also used to cover all the administrative costs while providing a financial cushion to cover the irregular use of the studio during the year. Therefore, we think that free-riders take unfair advantage of the privileges paid by other users. Offending users will see their annual registration revoked without possibility of a refund and won't be allowed to reregister for the studio before one year. Studio4fun reserves the right to validate the identity of the user who is at the studio at any time during a booked time-period.

Can we subscribe as a group? For example, David and Paul are associates in a photography company: D&P Photo Inc.

Yes. However, all the users of this group must be properly identified during the registration process, and the group will be limited to a maximum of 4 users. These users must be legally bound under the name of a company or an association. Receipts and invoices will solely be made to the name of the company or association. Moreover, the group will be submitted to the restrictions in a concurrent way (e.g., if the group register into category A, the total of time-periods booked by its members will have to be limited to 100 per year, and they won't be allowed to book more than 6 weekend time-periods per month).

Why is it more expensive than at the studios of University of Montreal, Cégep du Vieux Montréal, Dawson College or Marsan College?

These studios are not opened to everyone but rather to students of the aforementioned schools. These schools can rent their studios at a minimal price because they are government-subsidized. No private company could be profitable if it was offering a service at the same price. Being subsidized, these studios are not confronted with the same fixed costs (e.g., rent) and variable costs (e.g., maintenance) as Studio4fun. We are trying to minimize our expenses at the maximum in order to offer a rate that is as affordable as possible. Only 0.5% of users can benefit from student's rate while Studio4fun is aimed at a majority (99.5%) of users that is much more heterogeneous. It should be noted that students who completed their studies aren't allowed to access these subsidized studios anymore, and it is also in a desire to support their potential needs that Studio4fun has been created..

    Studio booking

What happens if a package A member books all the time-periods?

Photographers who are reaching the limits established by Studio4fun will no doubt benefit from renting their own studio, by themselves or with others since their frequency of use is fully justifying it. Studio4fun is meant for users whose frequency of use isn't high enough to justify the (co)renting of a studio by themselves.

How far ahead can we book?

1 month. However, users planning on using the studio on a continuing basis (e.g., a photo course which would be held every Thursday night) will be able to plan their booking many months in advance. It should be noted that all bookings must be paid in advance and are not refundable.

Can we cancel a booked time-period and get a refund?

No. The full payment is due at the time of booking and is not refundable. Cancellations to bookings are not possible and subletting won't be tolerated. In cases of force majeure related to the closure of the building (e.g., fire, gas leak, etc.) or in case of a mishandling at the time of booking, you will receive a credit. In all cases, please contact the administration to report any problems. Each case will be assessed individually.

Can a user book the whole weekend?

Yes. However, this person will have to pay the costs in full at the time of booking and will be subjected to the established restrictions such as the limit of 6 weekend time-periods per month.

Will weekends and evenings be always booked?

We remind you that by planning your needs in advance, you are virtually assured of getting the desired time-period without any problem, whereas waiting until the last minute might reduce your chances. The studio availability schedule can be consulted on our website at any time. The Studio4fun mandate is not to accommodate everyone. In order to moderate the use, we established restrictions with regard to bookings on weekends. These restrictions are mainly aimed at category A and B users who benefit from a reduced rate. Moreover, we added a third booking time-period on weekends in order to maximize the studio availability.

If, for example, a user books all the weekend time-periods of the month of September as soon as they are available, this will frustrate other users. Would it be appropriate to introduce a deterrent fee?

Any question of sharing leads to an equity concern. In the case of Studio4fun, this equity concern is related to the availability of the booking time slots. Availability cannot be unconditionally guaranteed unless we ask for a higher price as is the case with many other studios. Remember that the main mandate of Studio4fun is to provide access to a photographic studio at an affordable price.

Therefore, the time-period rate serves as a deterrent fee. Unlike a co-rented studio where everybody has to pay their part of the rent regardless of how many times they use it during the month (main source of disagreement when co-renting), Studio4fun charges according to the level of usage of each user. Lastly, it should be noted that it is possible to book one month in advance and that the dates are available on a daily basis. This means that on March 25, it will be possible to book any date until April 25.
